Tour Description

This is a day of discovery and history where you visit some of the most interesting and scenic areas of the Algarve. Steeped in tradition, encompassing the mountains and the sea it’s the perfect way to acquaint yourself with the Algarve. Our route follows lesser travelled paths, giving you a discerning view of Portugal’s past and present.

We travel to the town of Silves, in Moorish times the capital of the Algarve. Here we visit the castle which dates from this period and affords magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. The red-toned brick contrast seems to gleam in the sunshine and the sense of living history is palpable. There is time to visit the impressive Gothic cathedral and to wander the narrow streets and alleys.

From here we continue our ascent into the Monchique Mountains, a haven of green undulating hillsides, majestic cork trees and pungent eucalyptus groves. At the sleepy spa village of Caldas de Monchique one can partake of the natural spring waters, claimed to have fantastic medicinal properties. The village is tiny, but its buildings and surrounding areas are very beautiful and perfect for a leisurely stroll. Following the winding road to the highest point in the Algarve – Fóia, standingat 902m above sea-level. The views here are dramatic and the air incrediblypure.

Downhill then from Foia, crossing the countryside and stopping in the small village of Marmelete where you have time to enjoy lunch in one of the local restaurants (included).

After lunch we go straight to the Costa Vicentina, to visit some magnificent beaches where you can have some time to walk around take some excellent pictures, relax and enjoy the view.

Then it’s on to the ‘end of the world’ – the town of Sagres – famous home to Prince Henry’s School of Navigation. At Cape St. Vincent (Europe’s most south western point) a tiny lighthouse perches atop the cliffs and braves the elements. Breathe the invigorating sea air and marvel at the vastness of the landscape.

The Monchique Thermal Springs, known as “Termas de Monchique” in Portuguese, are a set of natural hot springs located in the Serra de Monchique mountain range in the Algarve region of Portugal.

The waters are often attributed with health benefits, particularly for conditions such as rheumatism, respiratory issues, and skin problems. Many people visit the Termas de Monchique seeking relief and healing through the mineral waters.

There are spa facilities in the area that utilize the thermal waters for various wellness treatments, including hydrotherapy, massages, mud treatments, and other therapeutic programs aimed at relaxation and health improvement.
