Cycling along the West Coast of Portugal, from Porto to Lisboa, is an opportunity to enjoy not only the beaches and fresh food, but also nature conservation areas, captivating cities and picturesque villages. Come and visit the pearl of the North, the city of Porto, whose former name “Portus Cale” is the origin of the toponym Portugal. It is a city full of rich history and culture. Whether to admire the traditional architecture or the avant-garde one, whether to enjoy a lunch by the riverside or a glass of port wine, or spontaneously wander the streets and get lost in the nooks, it is simply something not to miss and, therefore, the perfect place to start your adventure!

This tour by flat terrains is our easiest one. With routes by the ocean side, you have the chance to enjoy the West Coast sunny beaches, stopping in one beach bar terrace for a coffee or in another for some grilled fresh fish.

This cycling tour is a fantastic way to explore the diverse landscapes, culture, and history of Portugal’s West Coast. 1 Day:

 

Arrival – Porto city tour

 

The hilly city of Porto presents a mingled of styles and eras that will enchant you. Porto is renowned all over the world for its delicious fortified wine which is specific to the region, and refers to grapes that have been cultivated and harvested on the designated banks of the Douro River valley, and then transformed into this delicious nectar at one of the area’s many Port wine estates.

2 Day:

 

Porto – Ovar (51 km | 31.7 mi)

 

Today you will ride along the Douro River until its mouth. Then you will head south along the coast, mostly on bike paths, with beautiful sandy beaches on your right. During this ride, you’ll have plenty of places to stop and enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal or just to have a drink looking at the Atlantic Ocean.

3 Day:

 

Ovar – Mira Region (65 km | 40.2 mi)

 

Today’s bike ride will take you along the Aveiro lagoon. On the beach of San Jacinto, you will cross by ferry to Barra Beach, located on the south side of the lagoon. You will then continue along the Ria de Aveiro and find the bike path that will take you to your hotel in Mira Region.

4 Day:

 

Mira – Figueira da Foz (55 km | 34.2 mi)

 

Today’s bike ride will take you towards Figueira da Foz city. Figueira da Foz took its name from its location at the mouth (Foz) of the River Mondego, and it has developed into one of the main seaside resorts in the center of Portugal.

This trip is full of dune systems covered in pine forest, and you will take time to appreciate this lovely green scenery. You will cycle along the Atlantic Coast and up to the Serra da Boa Viagem, to appreciate the panoramic view from the Miradouro da Vela, from where you can see not only the city and the salt-pans of the River Mondego but, on clear days, as far as the Berlengas islands. The trip then descends to the lighthouse of Cape Mondego.

5 Day:

 

Figueira da Foz – São Pedro de Moel (65 km | 41 mi)

 

Today’s ride will start by crossing the bridge over the Mondego River until you arrive  near Carriço and head into a cycling path that leads you through the Pinhal de Leiria, a pine tree forest which was planted by the king D. Dinis in the 14th century to provide timber to build ships.

You will pass small beaches along the cycle path that crosses this immense pine forest. Beaches like Praia do Pedrógão, da Praia da Vieira and Praia de São Pedro de Moel are like oases in this countryside of pine forest covered dunes.

São Pedro de Moel has a large beach, and it is sheltered from the wind, ideal for sports, namely windsurfing and diving.

6 Day:

 

São Pedro de Moel – Foz do Arelho (55 km | 34.2 mi)

 

Leaving São Pedro de Moel behind, you will pass by Nazaré, a traditional and well-known fishing village. It is also the place where you can find the biggest waves ever in Praia do Norte  (due to Nazaré Cannon).

The last stop is Foz do Arelho, on the confluence between the Óbidos Lagoon and the sea, this place throws up the choice between two very different types of beaches.

7 Day:

 

Foz do Arelho – Óbidos (15 km | 9.9 mi)

 

On your last ride you will leave behind the Atlantic Ocean and move inland, cycling along the beautiful and quiet Lagoon.

The last stop will be the delightful town of Óbidos, with white houses adorned with bougainvilleas and honeysuckle. Óbidos is one of the most perfect examples of a Portuguese medieval fortress.
